Enjoy life twenty four seven

Hello there! Sanna here again with a wall art altered project I made using the April Main Kit and the Add-On Kit. This project is also part of my monthly "simply stencils" series. Hope you like it!

I started by cutting images from the ARTchix Ephemera Sheet (June 2013 Mixed Media Kit). I chose images and colours that would match the blue tissue paper.

I created this art project on a piece of really thick grey cardboard and before gluing anything I gessoed the background and the clipboards.

Next I took the blue piece of dekopatch tissue that was in the Mixed Media Kit and adhered it onto the background with a decopatch glue.

After that I took some tissue tape (from the March Add-On Kit) and adhered it onto the background pretty randomly.

Then I chose two rubber stamps (handwriting and a swirl stamp) and stamped a pattern with the blue and red Staz-On Midi Ink Pad here and there on the background.

After that I adhered the ephemera sheets on the clipboard pieces and directly onto the background. I used a decoupage glue from Marabu for this purpose.

White the clipboard pieces were drying I place the background piece into a cardboard box and added some IZINK gold here and there. After applying the ink I sprayed the areas with water mist. This way the ink spreaded and ran across the background. I really like this effect and the gold shimmers beautifully!

After finishing and drying the layout of golden droplets I also applied some Liquitex Titanium White Ink onto the background using the same technique. I just love the milky look it created onto the surface.

Now it was time for the background to dry, so I went over and mixed some glitter paste with Alumidust Powder (red plum).

Then I applied the paste thru a stencil onto the clipboard pieces for more structure and detail. These now needed to dry properly.

Finally I also added some random black ink splatters to the background. I used a black Glimmer Glaze for this purpose.

Then I went along and adhered the clipboards onto the background and started decorating the artwork.

I had previously made some resin pieces (see the silver Alumilite powder on the bottom of the molds for metallic effects!) from both Amazing Clear Cast and Amazing Casting Resin and I had also added some golden or silvery shine to the pieces. They were nice additional details for the "canvas".

The chipboard piece (bird) is treated with IZINK gold before adhering it to the clipboard.

The "metal" key is a resin piece I created from with the molds. I first made a bluish clear resin (toned with the Alumilite Blue Dye colour) and before pouring it into the mold, wiped some Alumilite Metallic Powder Silver onto them. As an end result I got this gorgeous key.

The words are from the March Add-On Kit and by Tim Holtz.

I hope you have enjoyed this little project and get inspired to create!
Have a lovely day,
Sanna

Gelli Prints + Viva Modeling Creme= Happy Holidays!!

Good morning! Today I wanted to share my tutorial on how to make a piece of holiday home decor using products from the December Frog Dog Studio kit.

To begin this project, I prepped the 6 x 6 sticky backed canvas from the kit using Silks, spray ink with a stencil, and alcohol inks.

Since I got my Gelli plate a few months ago, I've been addicted to making prints and hoarding them. For this project, I thought it would be fun to use them with a holiday spin. I selected a few prints and cut them into strips to form a Christmas tree. I attached them to the canvas with matte medium.

Since it's the holidays, I thought I would add some sparkle by covering the Gelli print Christmas tree with Viva Decor Glitter paste. When that was done, I did some shading around the tree with a grey Copic marker and then used some letter stamps and StayZ on ink to add the sentiment.

The next step was to create the larger canvas background. Using a 12 x 12 canvas board (which I really recommend for mixed media, as it's a harder surface and is easier to work on than a stretched canvas), I laid down a Heidi Swapp sunburst stencil and gently applied the pearlescent Viva Modeling Creme. The effect was really beautiful!

To finish the piece, I peeled off the sticky backed canvas with the Christmas tree and stuck it to the larger canvas in the middle of the sunburst. I also added some fun metallic sequin type embellishments to the tree for ornaments. They really shine!

And the finished product:

Let's see what the Frog Dog Studio team created today!

Design Team member Keri Babbitt shares our first project today.  Here's what she has to say!

I used LuminArte Silks Acrylic Glaze in African Jade, Carmen, Fern, Ice, & Solar Gold for this holiday layout.  I also used Viva Colour Modeling Cream in Pearl.

Designer Techniques:

1.  After applying a thin coat of African Jade over kraft paper, I dipped a small paintbrush into the paint, and flicked thick lines in a random pattern.  I love the tone-on-tone look this creates!

2.  The chipboard strips were created by mixing glitter into the Pearl modeling cream, and applying with a palette knife.  I created a shimmery, two-toned finish on the raw chipbboard by applying a thin layer of Ice glaze, followed by blotting on Solar Gold in some areas.

3.  The acrylic stamps from the Frog Dog December kit work so well with the Silks Acrylic Glaze.  I applied both African Jade and Fern to the stamps with a foam brush before stamping, to create a lightly variegated image.

Designer Tip:  The Silks glazes layer so well on a variety of surfaces.  On this project alone, I applied it to canvas, chipboard, wood, and both matte and glossy paper.

Our next project share is by Design Team member Tina Walker.  She created an Colorful Canvas full of texture!

I really love creating canvases, starting with a bright, colorful background.  My canvas background starts it's colorful journey with several colors of Luminarte Acrylic Silks.  I layered Silks in a random manner, covering the entire canvas in color.  Silks are semi-transparent, so when you layer colors on top of each other, you get a great depth of color.

When the Silks were dry, I added Glitter Paste with one of my favorite The Crafters Workshop stencil to my background.  The Glitter Paste 'pulls' the Silks color, thereby 'coloring' the Glitter Paste.  This is one of my favorite techniques when using Silks.

After the Glitter Paste dried, I cut a circle template with my Silhouette Cameo, then traced the circles on my background.  Using Distress Paint in Picket Fence, I painted around each circle, allowing the color of the Silks and Glitter Paste to POP out in the circles.  (I painted several coats of Distress Paint to matte out the color outside the circles).  Since Distress Paint also has semi-transparent properties, subtle hints of color still peeked through the white.

I outlined each circle with a Black China Marker, then a Charcoal Stick.  (Spray the Charcoal with fixative to prevent it from smearing).  After a spritz of fixative, I outlined each circle with a White China Marker.

Have you tried Luminarte Acrylic Silks?  We would love to know what you think about them.

Be sure and hop on over to the Splash of Color Blog to see what their Design Team is sharing today!

Remember to leave a comment on both the Frog Dog Studio blog and the Splash of Color blog each day for a chance to win!  Stop by tomorrow for our final day for projects from 2 more Designers.

Texture Tips with Melissa-A Christmas Shadow Box

Good morning everyone! First off let me say that this month's Frog Dog Studio kit is awesome and one of my favorites so far. I was so inspired when I opened the box. I knew right away I wanted to make all of my projects in a Christmas theme since this is my favorite time of the year. I also knew I wanted to use as much of the kit on this particular project, since there were so many creative options. This month's texture tip involves the modeling cream, which is much smoother than modeling paste. I also love the pearly-ness of it :)

Let's get started!

The first thing I did was prep my main pieces, which were the bristle brush tree and the Tim Holtz Configurations box (I removed the smaller boxes that fit inside to use in a later project). I painted the tree with a mixture of the blue and green Silks. I used the gorgeous red on the box--I put on two coats to make it darker.

TEXTURE TIP: Using the modeling cream and the stencil, apply using a flat edge. Gently scrape it on. I was very generous with mine because I wanted a definite raised texture. Another cool thing I discovered is that when I hit the areas that had the modeling creme with the heat gun, it created a sort of crackle finish. I also added texture by brushing the snowflake stamp with some modeling creme and randomly stamped around the box. I also stamped it with black StayZ on ink and the checkerboard stamp.

Next, I selected a piece of the Tim Holtz fabric and cut it down to fit inside of the box. I adhered it using matte medium.

I wanted to give the box a little bit of a distress finish, so I rubbed it all over with Tim Holtz Distress Stain. It really highlighted the areas with the modeling creme and blended it all together nicely.

Now for the fun part--to decorate the tree! I love the little details like this :) To begin, I wrapped the bottom of the tree with the burlap ribbon in the kit and attached using the hot glue gun. Then, I wound the tinsel around the tree and attached the little metal gears with hot glue. I found some poinsettia paper flowers from last year in my stash and attached those as well.

I fussy cut one of the little girls from the clip art in the kit, and also found another die cut girl from my stash to use. I attached them using hot glue.

Since everything is better with glitter (not to mention that I am totally addicted to the Viva Glitter paste from one of the previous kits), I brushed it all over the sides of the box, as well as the tree and the girls.

To finish, I made a little banner out of washi tape and twine and ran it along the top--attaching with hot glue.

And here is the finished project! I hope you enjoy :)
