Kid Stuff Canvas

Youer than you!

Here's what I used from the kit...(yellow stars)

My granddaughter LOVES Giraffe's, so when I decided I'd make a canvas for a child's room I was drawn to "Geoffrey." I picked out a piece of yellow printed scrapbook paper that was compatible  with the Pitt Big Brush pens I was going to use.

Below you can see that I first sketched the Giraffe outline with a pencil.
Start with 2 ovals, one slightly bigger than the other & connect.

Next, I added the background to my canvas. I am using an 8 X 8.  I don't really need to apply a base coat of gesso because this canvas is already primed.

I first used the Blue Pitt Big Brush Pen, "scribbling" across the whole canvas then spraying with a light mist of water...I moved the ink around on the canvas with a foam brush.

After I dried that layer with a heat tool, (doesn't take long!) I grabbed the stencil below and created several layers.

For the first layer I sprayed Dylusions Inks in Vibrant Turquoise and then London Blue, blotting it with paper towels before lifting up the stencil.

After that layer was dry, I used the same stencil, but this time I used gesso.

I sprayed another thin layer of Dylusions Ink (Vibrant Turquoise), tipping the canvas to let some drip and then blotted with a paper towel and allowed to dry.

I hit the canvas with light mist of the White Dylusions Ink from our kit.

Meanwhile, I cut out the sketched giraffe in pieces and when the canvas was dry, adhered with Studio Matte Medium, which you can purchase in our Frog Dog Store.

Below, I added spots, eyes, nose and inner ear with gesso (later, I also added the teeth)...preparing these areas to "receive" the Pink Pitt Big Brush Pen."  If I had skipped the gesso step, the ink from the Big Brush Pen would have soaked into the thin scrapbook paper and would not have kept its true color.
The Gesso also adds dimension.

I decided on a "sentiment" and typed it out in "Pages" (word processor on my MAC) using the
font BOSSHOLE

and printed it off on white card stock, cutting out each word separately.

I added some yellow with my Neo II water color crayons and then doodled a border.
I also used the fun yellow hole punch reinforcements (I had to look up their name -I would have just called them the little hole cover thingies)

Above you can see the Blue Fragments from our kit...I love the dimension and "silliness" they add...I adhered them with matte medium.

FINALLY, I wrapped the canvas in the super cool pink vinyl ribbon from our fabulous kit, stapling it to the top and finishing with a bow.  One of the things I discovered with this stuff, is that it takes on shape.

In the picture above, you can also see more closely where I added a border to the canvas with the Pink Pitt Big Brush Pen...rubbing it in with my fingers while it was still a little wet.

See below:
I wrapped it in a pen to give it a loose corkscrew shape.

You can't see it, cause it's transparent, but I added a bit of Aileen's craft glue to a couple of spots on the ribbon to keep it in place on the front of the canvas.

Thanks for visiting!

I hope you are inspired to create your own canvas with our FABULOUS SEPTEMBER KIT!

It's such a blessing to share your passion with others,
thanks for visiting!

September Guest Designer, Gwen Lafleur Part Two!

Hello and Happy Thursday!

Our Guest Designer, Gwen Lafleur is back with a couple more projects!  We seriously love her creativity and are so happy she created more today!

Let's get right to her projects!

Art Journal Spread

For my second project, I used the kit along with some goodies from my stash to make a spread in my art journal… one of my favorite spreads so far!

I went through a lot of layers to get to the final point, so I thought I’d put together some tips on how I put it

Step 1: Stencil, stencil, stamp!

1. I picked a stencil and used it with Dylusions mists on both sides of my spread as my foundation.

2. Then, I layered several more templates and different colors on top. I was looking for little pockets of interesting stuff that I could highlight later on. (I knew I was going to cover a lot of it up, so I wasn’t too worried about how it looked at this point.) I also added some stamping (you’ll want to dry your layers in between, especially if you’re changing color families – it will help keep them from getting too muddy.)

3. I attempted to stamp with the white Dylusions spray, but I got kind of a vague outline… that was okay, I went over it with a paintbrush. What I was looking for was a base that I stamped over again in pink – the white helped it pop off the background a bit more.

Step 2: Add the last pre-paint details

4. I used my orange Sharpie to add some detail and color to a few of my stamped images.

5. Using the stamp marker, I also added a bit more color to some of the stenciled areas.

6. Finally, I used the Paper Pen and detail tip to outline some of the stamps, and also added the rest of my price stickers. Looks like a hot mess, huh?

Step 3: Paint!

7. I decided what I wanted the main color scheme to be for the top layer and put a few shades of blue paint on my palette. Then I used my finger to apply it, working around the areas that I wanted to leave visible – I like using my finger for this because it helps me blend better, so there’s less of a defining line between the painted and unpainted areas.

8. Now… doesn’t that look a lot better? Some really fun and interesting areas are peeking through.

Step 4: Add the final details

9. I wanted to bring the kit stamps back to the front of the page, so I made a quick circle template with some scrap paper and stamped several of the images on top so they would show through the hole.

10. You can see how it looked – I did that a few times on the spread.

11. I went back with my Paper Pen and detail tip to go over some of the designs that were peeking through the paint. Then I added some Glossy Accents and Frantage Fragments to highlight some of the areas and add some texture. Just to finish it off, I added a few sprays of white Dylusions mist – the perfect final touch!

That was it! I finished it off by pulling out some old alphabet stickers to spell out my quote. Then I sealed the stickers with some gel medium. And there you have it… one of my favorite art journal spreads to date.

But Gwen just couldn't stop creating with the September kit, so she is sharing another project with us today!  We just love this one and it is so versatile and awesome!

Project Life Cards

After making my first two projects, I still had quite a bit left from my kit, so I decided to make a set of Project Life cards. Of course, you could also make ATC cards instead. After I finished these, I started thinking that I’ll probably use them in my cardboard art journal instead of in my Project Life album – they really look good in there!

Here are a few quick tips on how I made these. As you can see, I pretty much followed a formula which made them very quick and easy to put together.

Step 1: Get your crafty mis en place ready to go!

1. I took 3 sheets of my canvas paper and cut it into 3”x4” pieces. Then I stamped on the scraps and cut them into circles. I also cut off a few pieces of my paint chips.

2. I adhered my paint chip strips to the top and bottom of my cards, cutting off the excess on either side (I made sure to center the strips so that I would have part of all three colors showing.)

3. From the rest of the paint chips, I punched out circles to put behind my stamped images (I made sure to punch close to the edge so I could still use the rest of the card.)

Step 2: Lace ‘em up

4. I cut another piece from my paint chip scraps and used a ruler and a pencil to mark where I wanted holes for my Rex Lace. Then I used my 1/8” setting on my Crop-A-Dile to punch the holes.

5. I let out a long piece of the Rex Lace and then just wrapped it through. I started out by pulling through from the back on the first hole so that the end would be on the back side.

6. Once it was threaded, I just cut off the ends and taped them down.

7. Now it’s all ready to decorate!

Step 3: Decorate!

I used the rest of my paint chip scraps, some patterned paper scraps, washi tape, mini alphabet stamps, and my Paint Pen with detail tip and my Frantage Fragments to finish these off. (Tip – I used 1/8” score tape to adhere the Rex Lace on the music card.) I’m pretty pleased with the results… I think I might need to make more!

WOW - aren't those just amazing projects?

Thank you again Gwen for taking the time to share your talent and creativity with us this month!  Please be sure and stop by Gwen's Blog and see more of her amazing projects!

September Kit Journal Page

I am in love with this little girl...She takes center stage in much of my life and art.
I am her Mimi:)

I know that I am partial...but Annabelle is definitely "un-believably cute!"
Just like the precious children in your life, I imagine:)

So, here was the process...

1st step...coat page with a thin layer of white gesso.

Next I applied yellow acrylic paint to the journal page with an old rewards card.

Before the yellow paint was completely dry, I laid this diamond stencil down on the page...using a baby wipe (you could use a wet paper towel) wipe off the yellow paint within each diamond. Putting the gesso on first helps make this process more effective.

Next, I added some "flower doodles" using white Gesso.

I also randomly sprayed the page with the Dylusions White Ink Spray from our kit.

Time for some more layers and finishing touches.

Above, I outlined the page with the Pink Big Brush Pen and smeared it with my thumb while it was still wet.  I love markers, and these have become one of my favorites!

I also added the fun Blue Fragments (also from our great September kit), using a little matte medium.

Above, I added hearts using a small punch and the paint chip samples...then added the hole reinforcers with a bit of doodling.

I wrote the words (Un-Believably-Cute)  on white card stock, cut them out and added a bit of color
with the Pink Big Brush Pen.

I layered some of my doodles with my Uni-ball Signo white pen and inked up this flower stamp (designed by Alisa Burke) with the Pink Pitt Big Brush Pen.

For the Photo images of my Annabelle, I used Transfer Artist Paper. (TAP)
Simply print your images, using your home computer and printer, directly onto this 8 1/2 X 11 Transfer Paper.  Once dry, simply iron onto the surface you wish to transfer to...it will work on paper, fabric, wood, glass, metal, clay and more:)  I have not yet tried all of these surfaces,
but certainly will in the future!

Above is a transfer I did on a simple tag.  I added a hint of white gesso to the edge, then smeared a little color over it with the Pink Pitt Big Brush Pen.

Below is a picture of the letters I printed on the TAP.  If you are going to transfer letters, remember to "flip" the images so that when you iron them on they are not backwards:)

Below, you can see that I ironed on the letter A to this little linen tag.

The image above was also done with TAP.  With this one, I ironed Annabelle onto a piece of homemade paper...adhered it to the page with matte medium, and doodled around it.

(I love this moment caught on camera....she was "sneaking" her binkie out of the diaper bag...the one she can only have when she takes a nap...so sneaky:) )

For all the black "doodles" I used my favorite doodle pen "Scarlet Lime."

The black circles you see were "stamped" on with the lid of my black craft paint:)

Hope this inspires you to use our September kit!  It is full of great products that you can continue to use for many projects in the future!  Buying kits expands "your stash" with great products that you can learn how to use right here on our blog for FREE!!!

It's a blessing to share with you,

Mixed media Disco style!

Hey there bloggers Rita Barakat, here on this fine Tuesday.
Today my little card was made with Septembers mixed media kit at Frog Dog Studio!
When you photograph your projects you see things differently and right about now
I am getting a little kick out of this because to me she looks like a disco diva!
All we need are some tunes and a disco ball! LOL
And maybe some roller skates!
I glue the paint chips down onto a piece of chipboard.
Trim any excess.
Then I added lots of circles and lots of white mist!
This  was just the first layer!
Then I drew and colored my girl on the pad in the kit.
It has a different texture than I am used to but it grabs the color form different mediums quickly.
First pencil then PITT Artist pens.
Then Gelatos. Color and  blend with a wet paint brush.
Then I added a layer of Silks paints for texture and shine.
I ended up changing the orange to pink. She was so vibrant that I need to go back
and tone down the background. This time I sprayed the white mist onto a palette
and used a paint brush to pick up and spread the white.
I hope you have enjoyed my tutorials here at Frog Dog Studio!
This is my last blog post with these talented ladies!
I had so much fun playing with the kits!
I hope you visit me on my blog.

With Brave Wings--Mixed Media Drawing on a Gelli Print

Hello everyone! Melissa here with a tutorial on a little project I made up using the rest of my September kit.

This month I was introduced to Gelli printing for the first time and I just can't express to you how much I LOVE making these prints!! There are just so many possibilities. For this little project, I wanted to do a simple drawing on top of the gelli print background that I had created using the canvas paper pad from the kit. I started out by lightly sketching the bird with a pencil, then outlining it with a black Pitt pen. I stuck a few leftover neon reinforcement circles onto the page, and also added some polka dots to the wing, using a Sharpie poster paint marker.

Next, I used my white gel pen to outline the bird and add a little character. Using the Faber Castel Big Brush marker (in pink), I outlined around the reinforcement circles and the bird and then blended it all in with my finger. This helps to incorporate the images and stickers into the background, rather than have them sticking out. I also used a purple Inktense pencil to shade under the wing.

At this point I noticed a few blank spots on the piece that were bugging me, so I added a few pieces of Tim Holtz tissue tape to fill in the gaps. I also smudged a little bit of pink with the big brush marker to help it blend in. Using the exclusive Frog Dog Studio stamp set and the Faber Castel Big Brush pen (in Pink Madder), some stamping was added into the background for texture. To finish, I stamped a quote onto a piece of scrap paper then cut it apart and glued it to the piece. Rub ons were also added.

I found this cute little frame when I was cleaning out my closet and thought it matched this project perfectly! So here it is, all complete and ready to gift :)
