Here's what I used from the kit

Frog Dog Original Stencil

Cosmic Pink Embossing Powder

Freaky Franken Lime Starburst Spray

Along with Black Modeling Film...VERY cool stuff!

I have LOVED every bit of our kit this month...  

I could not stop creating projects, and I still have product left for more:)

For this project, I began with the intent of putting the Pink Embossing Powder to good use, and a card is what emerged... perfect for my monthly series: Letter It!

I created the outside of the card first.

Cutting...

2- 6 X 6 Black Cardstock

3- 5X5 White Carstock

I adhered the white card stock (using a tape gun)

 to the front of the card and the 2 inside pages.

To join the pages, I punched 3 small holes in the black card stock.

The first hole was punched in the center -at the 3 inch mark, and the other two holes were made 1/2" from the edges.

I cut a piece of black waxed linen to tie in each hole, adding a few beads and double knotting the ends.

In the photo above, you can see the details outlined below

1.) I used our ORIGINAL FROG DOG STENCIL for the background.  Laying the stencil down on the center of the white card stock, I pressed an embossing pad all over the stencil to prepare the surface for the COSMIC PINK EMBOSSING POWDER. I sprinkled on the POWDER, and then "hit it" with my heat gun.

2.) Using a Black StazOn Ink pad, I stamped the fun chandelier.  

3.) I drew a pumpkin shape on the BLACK MODELING FILM, and then used a WHITE UNI-BALL SIGNO PEN to add detail to the pumpkin.

4.) I added embossing ink to the eyes, and heat set the COSMIC PINK EMBOSSING POWDER ...lastly, adding the pupil with a BLACK SCARLET LIME PEN.

5.) To give the pumpkin some dimension, I warmed the BLACK MODELING FILM with a heat tool and bent it into the shape I wanted.  Once cool, it holds the shape.  Love it!

6.) I adhered the pumpkin to the card with Craft Glue.  You could use whatever you have on hand...a glue gun, glue dots, etc.

7.) I had picked up some scrabble letters at an Antique mall, and glued the word BOO on the card.

8.) The rest of the cover details were drawn with the WHITE SIGNO UNI-BALL PEN, BLACK SCARLET LIME and an ORANGE GLAZE PEN.

SO, now for the inside...

and the MONTHLY SERIES FOCUS...LETTER IT!

Using a mechanical pencil, I wrote the words "HAPPY HALLOWEEN"

Nothing too fancy, right? The more "random" the better...keeping the letters fairly close together.

Next, I outlined each letter with a BLACK PITT PEN. (XS)

You can see in the photo above that in the areas where the letters overlap, you make the decision as to which letter is "on top" of the other...either way you choose will work:)

Then, erase the pencil lines.

I drew a pumpkin around the words using a pencil.

I added thickness to the letter lines by going over them with the BLACK SCARLET LIME pen, 

which naturally has a heavier width.

THEN, I used a wet brush to pick up color from the end of an 

orange CARAN D'ACHE NEOCOLOR II CRAYON, 

filling in color all around the words and within the pumpkin shape I drew.

1.) I added BLACK details with the PITT MULTI LINER (xs)

2.) Using embossing ink and then embossing powder (as I did on the front of the card) I added color and dimension to the letters.

you can see that the COSMIC PINK EMBOSSING POWDER HAS A BIT OF BLACK IN IT.

It doesn't come this way, I accidentally mixed a bit of black embossing powder in my pink...

but, I don't mind it:)

3.) The Green leaf is colored with the FREAKY FRANKEN LIME STARBURST SPRAY.

(I sprayed a little "puddle" of green on a scrap piece of paper, and then "painted" it on with a brush.)

4.) I drew some random orange dots with the CARAN D'ACHE ORANGE NEOCOLOR II,  and then saturated a brush with water, pulled color off the crayon and "spattered" it onto the card. The dots were outlined with an XS Black Pitt multi liner.

5.) the last details were added by using a Tim Holtz Rub On sheet.

Playful Musings: Halloween Design Fun

Understanding basic design terms and element theory, helps one layout their design and how to use color.

You can stamp into Embossing Paste!  Let set up about 10-15 minutes (test your area, humidity or dryness of weather can affect drying times!  Experiment to see how long it takes.).  You don't want the paste all the way dry but you don't want it wet.  A stamp can be impressed into the paste and leave an impression without the paste leaving residue on the stamp.

I not only sprayed the film viewer piece, but used the stem from the sprayer to add splats of paint.  This is from Lindsey's Stamp Gang and is a part of your KIT!!!

The moldable film was used with a die cut machine to cut out the bat.  If you wanted to curl the wings, zap it with a stamping heat tool and bend up or down the wing edges.


Design Terms

When designing a layout, I have a basic idea but as I work, things change according to how I want to add colors or following basic ideals of design elements.

Here is my basic layout.  You can see while it is nice, it is lacking something or looks unfinished.

Adding Contrast to layout
Adding splats of green color to film viewer, suddenly adds contrast and dimension to the area.  The viewer no longer looks flat.

The Embossing Paste adds contrast with texture, also adding texture.

Adding dimensional items to flat, also adds contrast.

Bright yellow web adds contrast next to a more muted color.

Repetition
Repetition of colors or textures, elements, adds interest to the piece.  Mostly they say as rule of thumb is "odds" is more pleasing to the eye.  Different elements placed to create an odd number can work, or an even number such as 2 can work if there is contrast in size or color so elements do not get lost in the art.

Creating a number of 5, and drawing the eye around the layout is the bat, witch sign, cardstock web, little boy, and pumpkin.  While the boy is the focal point, you want other elements to carry your eye around the layout.  The film view is actually 1 which is odd (try not to have too many 1 element unless it adds texture or contrast) but it also makes 3 with the silver web charm and the bottle hanging down.

As far as colors go...The Gelli printed background (See September LTD Kit), has yellow, orange and green.  Different shades of orange was used for repetition, purple was added a couple places as repetition and contrast, and the green.

Bridging
Bridging connects elements of the layout together.  This way there is balance and elements are not just floating.  If there are 2 elements together, a 3rd (the bridge) can tie them together.

The boy collage piece is a bridge for the Gelli print and the Embossing Paste texture.  The chipboard web further bridges the collage element to the Gelli print.  The collage image bridges the film viewer.  The  witch sign and bat is also a bridge.

Knowing and understanding basic design terms can change the way you create your art.  You no longer have a lost feeling - what goes where??  What colors do I use???  Why does my art look off-balanced?

After some creating and practicing, the ideals of design will come second nature to you!  The ideals/terms come in handy as a reference when you are stumped or struggling with what you want to create.

Frog Dog Studio Kits take the worry out of creating because all the products inside are matched to go together or for the individualist, can be used separately.  Remember, a kit from the month(s) before can be used in a current kit :-D  I love that!  Because of the orange and fluorescent colors, I was able to use ink, and other items from the regular September kit.

Guest Designer, Sanna Lippert, Part Three

Hello and Happy Thursday!

Our Guest Designer, Sanna Lippert is back with a A LOT of  projects!  She just couldn't stop, but we loved that!  We seriously love her creativity and are so happy she created more today!

Let's get right to her projects!

After finishing the second canvas I had still plenty of with water mixed "Magicals" over so I took a 12x12 inch piece of thick watercolor paper and very freely applied plenty of color on the paper (as you can see on the photo, there is a green lake on the paper :)…). The just waited patiently for the colors to dry (might I add that I am not THAT patient…). So it was a long wait for me…

For the first card I cut a piece of that paper out to create a lovely orange background. I added some green "Maginal" drops with a paint brush over the orange layer for detail and then I took the white paper bag that all the lovely Frog Dog Studio goodies were in and stamped some leaves on it. I wanted to use the bag as the paper is fairly thin which makes it easy to glue it down on the card with "Glue n´Seal" medium.

Next I just added a sentiment and the first card was finished. I used StudioAE stamps by Technique Tuesday for this purpose and stamped with black ink.

 

 

For my next card I first took a plain white card base, added some black color splatters on the background (Magicals), let them dry, stamped some border images on the white paper bag, glued those down onto the card using "Glue n´ Seal" medium and tucked the playing card that I had over from the kit behind the stamped borders. 

 

Then I just added a sentiment and some spray ink splatters for more interest and the second card was done. (photos: mixingwithwater, blacksplatters, stampedonpaperbag & a full and a detail photo of the card)

 

 

 

 

For the third card I first punched some circles out of the watercolor paper everything had started with, inked the circle edges black and added some Tim Holtz Rubs onto the circles. 

 

Then I took a card base, added some black splatters (Magicals), glued the circles down, stamped a sentiment and the card was finished. I just love the two toned powders – the shine is so beautiful!!! For the fourth card I stamped some leave images directly onto the watercolor paper and glued it down onto a card base. 

 

Next I punched various sized circles out of the leftover stamp sheet, inked the edges black and then layered them to create a flower. The leaves are from my junk drawer and made out of artificial leather. Their color was perfect for this card. Finally I just added a quote on a personalized tag, glued a butterfly button in the centre of the flower and added some dimensional pearls for more interest. For the fifth card I again used a piece of that watercolor paper as a background and added some black (Magicals) splatter over the surface. You might have noticed by now how much I like to use color splatters ;-). Next I took some struckture paste, mixed it with the black "Magicals" powder to get a darker tone and applied it over a The Crafter´s Workshop stencil ("halftone circles"). 

 

Next I took some circles to create more flowers. I layered different papers over each other to create a different looking flowers as on the previous card.  The leaves are fussy cut and glued down partly under the flowers. I also stamped a scallop border onto the card with black ink and fussy cut along it to add more interest to the card. 

 

For final detail I again added some dimensional pearls into the centre of the flowers and finally stamped my sentiment. (photos: liveinthemoment_full, circlespunched, stencilledcircles, addingmoldingpaste, splatters, coloringstruckturepaste)

 

 

 

 For my sixth card I used similar techniques as on the card before (watercolor background, added some molding paste, punched circles etc.). It is just a different stencil (four ferns by The Crafter´s Workshop) and there are some wooden buttons for decoration. Also I stamped another sentiment and a different border for this one. Other than that, it is done in the same way.

 

And finally card number 7.  For this card I tried used the last punched circles and some of the lovely rub-ons that were on the kit. 

 

I stamped a border, fussy cut it, glued it down on the upper end of the card, added some rub-ons for detail and glue down the circles. And naturally, there had to be some black "Magicals" splatters in there too. Then I just stemped a sentiment and my last card was done.

 

 

And the best thing? I still have so much product left that I can create many more projects using the goodies that were in the kit!! I´ve loved using this kit and hope you will enjoy my little projects and get inspired!! It has been a pleasure being here!! Thank you Frog Dog Studio and Tina for having me.
